Don't Worry, I'm Still Here

Hello my Triple F faithful.  Sorry I haven’t posted in over a week but the school work has picked way up and my health has gone way down.  When I last posted I described the sickness I felt coming on, well ladies and gentlemen it came and it came hard!  I’m still feeling the effects but I’m certainly getting better.

The theme of this post is bad news, at least it would’ve been had I posted it a couple of days ago, but some things have started to pick back up again, at least they are in my mind.  Remember folks, it’s not about the cards your dealt; it’s about how you play them. That’s why my bluffs used to work so well on the felted tables. I’m not going to be as descriptive as I’ve been in the past when I talk about the past few days, it would be too depressing and nobody would read anymore, so I’ll just summarize here and there and I’ll break away from that whenever it’s necessary.

Hell Weekend

Last weekend truly was Hell Weekend.  On paper, it was three straight days of 8 hours at the school’s gym.  An hour and a half of PT and then D-Tac for the rest of the weekend which culminated with a fight against one of our instructors and then a written/computer test on the subject was to follow that.  I’m still extremely sick at this point.  I was up all night Thursday coughing despite trying to falling asleep at 9o’clock to get a jumpstart on the brutal weekend.  As physically demanding as the weekend was, nothing was more devastating than how I felt when I read the news that some of my friends back lost a dear member of their family after an 18 year battle with Cancer. Annie, you are well revered and will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing you.  I know your boys will continue to make you proud.

I received that text just before we began our warm-ups for PT.  I could feel my performance was greatly impaired by my breathing but this wasn’t the same altitude breathing issue that everybody’s been talking about since I got here, it was worse.  The day’s lesson was plyometrics, aka jump training.  In groups of 6, the class was to jump up onto this makeshift stage that is normally designed for a fitness instructor to guide the class, land with your heels on the stage and then extend your hips.  This goes on for a minute and you count your reps.  I made it up 34 times which was actually one of the highest totals in the class.  When I got down, I remember people talking to me and then the whole room got white.  I didn’t pass out or anything but everything was mashed together and blanked out by a white screen.  Then I found out we were doing the exercise again.  As the first group went, I informed Mike about what was going on and he told me sit out and then lift while the rest of the class ran a half mile outside.  Considering the crazy weekend, I had no problem doing that.  It’s easier to make up a missed workout than it is to make up a missed practical...that would require me to come back next semester and this whole trip would basically be a wash.

Grabbed lunch at the food court after PT, officially registered for my wildland fire training course, and then brought in the floor mats for D-Tac, that room was my home for the rest of the weekend. Friday was mostly review and we incorporated some cool takedowns that I can’t wait to show people when I get home haha. These suckers work too, the smallest girl in the class was throwing me around the mats. Some of the takedowns were familiar, the beginning holds and motions looked like a lot of the takeouts some of us do at security…minus the take down part.  We started early on Saturday and this was one of the uglier days.  When I was getting ready at class I realized one of my duty gear pieces was missing.  I had to inform my instructor right away that I had to drive home, I live the furthest away of all of the students so I missed a good bit of class that day. I ransacked my room, couldn’t find the missing piece of equipment.  I got back to class feeling that I must’ve missed it when searching in my gym bag, I still couldn’t find it.  My instructor could see how worked up I was getting and she was quite comforting in the fact that I was hyperventilating.  She had me fall in with the rest of the class and we’d work something out later.  I was panicking for two reasons. 1, it absolutely drives me nuts when we get punished for stupid stuff like not taking care of your equipment and 2, this was the most dangerous piece of equipment that we currently have on our duty belt and I was sick at the thought that it fell out of my gym bag in the parking lot or something and some student found it.

I remembered that I was practicing with this piece of equipment the night before and that I put it away so I was baffled over the whole thing.  After a day of practicing some MMA ground tactics, I returned home and looked everywhere in my house once again.  My goose was cooked.  I took a deep breath and said I was going to start all over again, starting with my gym bag.  I emptied that sucker out and flipped it upside down…still nothing….until I turned it back over and grabbed it by the inside of the bag.  I’m not sure how but this piece of equipment somehow got wedged between the webbing of the bag and the metal frame on the bottom of it.  Absolutely crazy.

Feeling relieved, I met up with the study group at Arkansas’ place.  Eight of us crammed into her living room but I was scarce, after the two days I had I wanted to go outside and play with Benjamin & Katie (her landlord’s dogs if you’re just joining us). As expected, the study session turned into a hangout and then we crammed in what we could up until about 1045.

Ready to Rumble

The big day was finally here, the last day of D-Tac.  “Fight Day”. We showed up for our 8 o’clock start, warmed up, and then sat around outside the room until it was our turn to be tested on our handcuff, searching, strike, stance, pressure point, and weapon retention skills.  In Stan and my case, we waited for 2 hours and 45 minutes.  Good thing we warmed up.  To pass the time, everybody reviewed with their partners and some of us weaseled our ways onto the basketball court to shoot some hoops.  I took a couple of shots and couldn’t breathe so I stopped…I wish this breathing crap would stop.  Prior to going in for our test I informed Stan about the only two mistakes I was going to make if I made any since they are the ones I made during our practice sessions.  I was good with them 90% of the time but if I made a mistake…this was what it was going to be.  I can’t tell you what the mistakes were but I made them on my practical and I had to retest right away…which was good because I had to articulate why its important to do one of the things I didn’t do and had I not done that, I would have gotten the question wrong on the written test.

About half of the class failed something so the practical portion took longer than everybody expected.  There was no assigned lunch break so you had to guess when we wouldn’t be reuniting as a class to try to sneak some food into your belly.  After the practicals we were briefed a little bit on the fight sequence and were informed that the instructors determined the lineups for the fight so that the class wouldn’t send in shape people and “Big Country” in early to beat on the instructors, making things easier for the rest of the class later.  Big Country which was the nickname I was given by one of the instructors…who ironically worked with my friend Eric down at Lake Meade. Eric is the dude that sort of helped guide me in the direction of Park Rangerdom as well as the reason we have the Awesome Indy instead of some calf muscle biting Puggle thanks after Laura and I spent some time with his prince of a German Sheperd, Riggs.  Yes I literally tell Indy she’s embarrassing us in front of royalty when she acts out around Riggs.

After our briefing we were sent out into the gym to start stretching while the instructors got ready for the mayhem.  As a class, we were going to watch President Travis go through the sequence so we knew what we were getting ourselves into. This was one of the instances I was glad I wasn’t elected Class President.  We had to run a lap around the gym with 2 basketball courts and 2 tennis courts, then go into our classroom and do somewhere between 20-30 jumping jacks, then there some job related calisthenics with fight simulation implications and then it came to the fight…all of this done in a row…in a room with no lights on and loud hardcore-heavy music playing….my type of scene but man I got tired just typing that sentence for you all.

The class rallied behind Travis during the fight and they were going at it.  The fight ended when you disengaged from the instructor and pulled your firearm out, one of the other instructors blows a whistle signaling your done.  I was so pumped up when that whistle blew,  I jumped on Travis and sent his exhausted body down to the ground.  I thought I was back playing basketball for the Lancers again and Rath just took a momentum changing charge against Matawan and the Huskies called a timeout to recuperate. The look on Travis face when he looked at me from his back was priceless and I immediately went “Oh shit! Are you alright?”  I literally thought I knocked him out.   I was then made his support body to make sure he had water if he needed it and I had to go to the bathroom with him if he went so he didn’t pass out.  His sparring partner came over and hugged him and they were both bloodied a little bit.  It was so cool.  The rest of the class then waited outside for their date with fate.  I could hear some familiar songs that I use for motivation while lifting and I was getting amped up by the door but that nearly backfired on me.  Just singing the songs and jumping straight up and down was too much for my lungs to deal with.  I felt like I was running a marathon and could only breathe through a straw. I started panicking, “how am I going to make it through all of these workouts and then fight somebody?!?!”  I literally felt myself fainting from the anticipation.

I don’t know where I get it from but I was able to calm myself down almost as fast as I got worked up, then my number was called, I was the 10th one to go.  What happened next I’ve played over in my mind time and time again ever since it happened; it was one of those unique experiences that I’d never get anywhere else.  Despite the fact that I was dying just after the lap around the gym, I was going to push myself through this.  Not only was it extremely difficult to breathe due to my sickness, I now had to do it with a mouth guard in. By the time I got to the station before the fight, I doubled over to catch my breath and I took my mouthpiece out…that was a big no-no.  My instructor went from calming me down to yelling at me to get my mouthpiece in, and she had her fist cocked ready to rock if I didn’t listen.  The instructors surrounded me and told me to tactically fall.  As I did, they all started hitting me, when I landed I had to try to get away from them, that’s when one of them jumped into my mount and the fight was on!  After some strategically placed breathing breaks and punches to the head, I threw the instructor to the side and I got in his guard.  He had my arms tied up so the only thing I could do was ram my head into his stomach as hard as I could to create some distance.  If this dude wasn’t wearing padding, he wouldn’t have been able to eat or shit for a week with the strikes I was delivering to his solarplexes.  I know the strikes were hard because I nearly gave myself a concussion when I was delivering them.

Our fight ended. I was gasping for air.  Some of my classmates tried talking to me and I just remember yelling, “get these fucking things off of me” referring to the MMA gloves I was wearing.  I spit into the garbage can A LOT!  Everybody wanted me to take pictures with my camera but my head was killing me, it felt like I was getting my brain bashed in with a baseball bat.  One of the instructors kept taunting me, “you gonna barf Big Country?” He’s awesome haha.  I eventually got myself together and like the rest of the class, I turned into the high school wrestling coach yelling instructions at my teammates while hovering over the top of them on the mats.

Roy "Big Country" Nelson

All in all it was a good experience.  We were the first class ever to not suffer any injuries.  I think Travis’ little scratch was the only blood sighting we had. Only one person threw up, and one of us found the one hole in the “circle of coaches” and teetered backwards onto the fitness stage.  It was so cool having each other’s backs the way we did and the best part about the whole weekend, since we took so long in the morning we were able to vote to move our test time to Tuesday morning which meant only one thing…let’s go watch the Super Bowl!

No More D-Tac...check out the bald hottie all the way to the right

Ten of us headed back to Granny’s Closet while others either headed home or to another student’s house to catch the game.  I knew the Packers were going to win, in fact it was kind of cool because they were the 6 seed just like my Regulators that brought home the Jerzee Extreme Fantasy Football Championship this season.  I’m not talking about all of the bandwagon jumpers but there are a lot of Packers fans out here in Flagstaff.  There are also a lot of Bears fans, Chargers fans, and of course Steelers fans as well.  We sat in the restaurant section this time, which made it a little bit harder to pay attention to what was going on but it was a cool environment.  I’ve never watched the Super Bowl anywhere other than a house and I can’t remember there ever being rival fans present as I watched it.  If it was the Giants I would care more about them clowns but I knew the Steelers didn’t have this one in them, especially with no Maurkice Pouncey or Aaron Smith.  Some of my classmates are diehard Packers fans and we were respectful of each other but I wanted to show these Mexican National wannabe gangstas sitting in front of the TV with their mismatched clothes that were sporting baseball teams from Atlanta, LA, and I think Boston all of the fun moves I learned this weekend.  They had no idea what was going on and would cheer obnoxiously loud at the most inappropriate times.  I swear at least twice one of them cheered while watching the TV and then turned and asked his friends what happened.  Very annoying. Everything was cool though when the commercials came on, the whole place got silent.  I think the crowd favorite was the one called “Carma”, when the dude swerves around the groundhog/beaver and then he pays the guy back by saving his life and then he gave him the little chest pound maneuver.  The whole place laughed in unison.

We got home and showered and stuff, then I began looking for my bruises, I didn’t have any.  Three days of D-Tac and all I had to show for it was two big raspberry looking mat burns from young and tiny Christine throwing me around the mat.  Nick wasn’t so lucky; he stopped counting after his 52nd bruise.  FIFTY TWO BRUISES!!!!!
Nick & Some of his 52 bruises...and no ladies he's not flexing hahaha

3 straight days of D-Tac and all I got are these gross mat burns...guess I'm the man

I couldn’t get to sleep and I remembered there are some over the counter drugs I haven’t tried yet so right before midnight I headed to the Walgreens that’s about a 2 minute drive from our house.  I pulled into the lot and there something being delivered.  After the delivery guy left, the manager locked the door.  I looked at the store hours, they closed at ELEVEN!  What the hell?  They can’t hang with Jersey.  I headed out to Walmart and got a bunch of drugs and OJ and came home.  Cloreseptic throat spray, Robitussin and Vick’s vapor rub… I’ve now thrown everything I can think of at this cough and it wasn’t giving an inch.

Before falling asleep I got the biggest surprise yet! My old boss, who many people question his personality, well the presence of there being one in him at all, sent me a text message about midnight  Jersey time.  He was checking in on me, wished me well, and talked a little bit of trash considering he’s a Packers fan and I’m a Steelers supporter…it was pretty cool actually.  He doesn’t do those sorts of things.
Goood Night Nurse!

Homey Don’t Play Dat

I can’t even tell you awful my chest, throat, and mouth feel today. I took more drugs, hoping to at least sooth the pain so I could run today. Wasn’t happening.  I was violently coughing the whole way to class, I didn’t even bother taking off my sweats.  Mike came in and I informed him right way as to what was going on.  He didn’t even let me finish half of my sentence before he gave me that condescending “this guy’s a wuss” smile.  I didn’t even let that bother me as I continued to say that “I don’t want to fall behind in class but I can’t run if I can’t breathe.”  His response to that was “You get out what you put into this class. Sooner or later you’re going to have to suck it up.  I went through the boot camp with pneumonia. You need to push yourself but don’t kill yourself. I don’t want to give you CPR…that would suck.”  I felt about 3 feet tall.  I took off my sweatshirt and led the class out to the tennis courts for warm-ups.  I think I was able to do 2 or 3 warm-up exercises before I was gasping for air and had to throw in the towel.  I spent a lot of money and made A LOT of sacrifices to come out here, I’m not making this any worse so it stays around all program long…I’ll never make it if it does. Homey don’t play dat.

I had some company on the sidelines today, a couple of knee injuries, so while the class was outside running, Eric P. and I hit the bench.  When the class came back, we sat in on the flexibility lecture and then the whole class broke to hit the weight room.  Annoying transition from PT to class followed, and I stocked up on cough drops to get me through class.  They surprisingly worked…in the classroom.  Whenever we left the room for our breaks, I began coughing my head off again.  Some of my classmates showed their concern and I explained that I’m trying to figure out what to do considering I don’t have any insurance.  Forest overheard the conversation and suggested this place his girlfriend went to which has a sliding scale pay system and accepts walk-ins.  I’ve never dealt with either of those things but it turns out the place around the corner from us that looks like a hospital that is constantly having construction done to it is actually a doctor’s office…and its open during the construction! Possible relief was in sight so I decided I was going to go to the hot tub at The Plex later to celebrate, hoping that it would speed up the recovery process.  On the way home from class I touched base with Kev, aka dad. I filled him in on hell weekend and proposed a donation idea for the Kathy Ward Memorial Scholarship Foundation (BlueClaws game is 7/8/11 people).  Some of us were talking about chipping in some money and buying some training batons and strike bags so that we could practice with them on our practice Sundays and donate them to the school for future classes to use.  Then I looked up how much they were.  With the majority of us not working while we’re here, there’s no way we could afford them.  I ran the idea by the old man and it’s going to be something we’re going to look into.  How cool! I got home, studied a little bit and I then caught up with my man Gannicus on Spartacus as well as those little rascals from Glee in the much anticipated post Super Bowl episode on Hulu then it was lights out.

Walk-ins Are Weird

Having never dealt with a walk-in type situation, I didn’t want to risk missing our test so I decided when I went to sleep last night that I was going put off going first thing in the morning and take a chance stopping by between my test and class.  Considering I fell right back to sleep at my 7 o’clock alarm, I was definitely not heading to the doctors before the test. Around 9, I got dressed in my uniform, which wasn’t required to take the test, and packed up my laptop in the event that I got in and out of the doctor’s office between the school events.  I got a quick review session in and then headed over to class.  The lot was packed! I coughed my way to the door and found Nick so he could show me where the computer lab was located.  Testing on the computer was interesting but I was done in less than a half hour. I informed President Travis and Director Kathy about my whereabouts in the event something happens and miss the beginning of class, Kathy requested I bring a doctor’s note with me.

I got to the doctor’s office and talked with a lady at the check-in counter.  I explained my insurance and no appointment situation and she informed me that I was 15th on the walk-in list and to just come back tomorrow. “We open at 645”, she added. OH NO!  I can’t take another night of this! I returned home and instead of taking a nap I applied for the seasonal ranger job in New Jersey and then returned to class.  The days lesson was on juveniles and I began wondering how my sister was able to work with juvenile offenders the way she does and I wondered if she thought she could teach the class.  The same coughing pattern was present, nothing in class but as soon as break comes…WATCH OUT!  Damn I can’t wait until I get better.

That night Nick made dinner.  I told him I didn’t want baked beans but he didn’t listen.  I had some and I was releasing the gassy demons the rest of the night.  Here’s the kicker, my bed feels like its…..hollow?  I never noticed it before but an hour or so after dinner I was calling my bed the echo bed because my farts were booming and looming if you know what I’m saying.  They kept interrupting my viewing of Bitch Slap….what a weird movie.  Sometime during the movie I got a text message from SIMPSON!  The dude was practically my best friend when I was Holmdel Park, we had a crappy goodbye when I left, and we haven’t talked ever since.  I’ve been meaning to call him for weeks and I never got around to it, so I made time to do it now.  We talked for about a half hour, he’s awesome.  I definitely miss working with people the likes of him and Augun and all of Simpson’s reports point to the place not being the same without me there…what else would you expect?!?!  I made sure I ended the conversation with “I love you” just to see how he’d react.  What? I tell the dudes I’m closest to that I love them, so what. This phone call coupled with a text message from my other old supervisor throughout the day, things were picking up.  It felt nice to be missed.

Time to Get Better

I was far away and dreaming when my phone starts ringing…it’s 3am.  I look down, it’s ERIC!!! The other guy I’ve been meaning to call for weeks hahaha.  I was too disoriented and drugged up to answer the phone and I had to be up in a few hours so I just let it be.  (Dana, don’t tell Eric I said that hahahahaha)
I headed over to the doctor’s office at 6:40am and I was the second car in the lot. It was 6:45 and they weren’t open, what a liar Ms. Front Desk Lady. It’s now after 7 and a small group of people are at the door and I could see one guy yelling at the staff through the window as he pointed to his imaginary watch.  It’s 7:20 and they still aren’t open.  That same gentlemen came up to my car and I didn’t know if I was going to have to hit him or if he had some news for me…he had some news for me.  They were having a staff meeting and wouldn’t be opening until 8:45am.  BIG TIME LIAR MS. FRONT DESK LADY.

I went back home and tried to sleep, wasn’t happening.  I hadn’t been coughing that much yet, probably because I woke up earlier than my cough did, so I seriously contemplated skipping the doctor and going to PT.  Then I walked back outside and my throat instantly dried up.  What the hell is going on?  I went back to the office and now there’s a small crowd standing at the door.  Great!  One of the maintenance guys directed everybody into his workshop so they could wait by the door but out of the wind.  All of the sheep followed. At 8:43 I left the workshop and got to the door just as it opened, I was one of the first people signed in and one of the first people seen. SUCKERS!

I was weighed by the intake nurse in my full winter gear, wallet, phone, car keys, and shoes and the scale said 262!  Bringing my total weight loss out here in Flagstaff to 23lbs in 5.5 weeks, and I haven’t been able to run in a week! That’s pretty cool if you ask me. I wonder when I’ll feel like it’s showing.

I’m not used to having lady doctors, so that was a bit of a shock to me, especially not one as nice as this lady was.  She was plain looking but looked like she was too good looking to be a doctor; she looked younger than me.  For you older Chiliheads reading this, she resembled Laura Bautista but she was almost my height, weird.  She did the whole stethoscope to my back move to check for my breathing and there was nothing getting through.  Dr. Dill made some sort of comment that my airway was so constricted that I couldn’t even wheeze.  I got hooked up to some breathing machine, Nick says it’s a nebulizer, I don’t know.  I looked like I was smoking a kazoo; I was inhaling moist air and expelling steam…if that makes sense…very new and weird to me.  The doctor informed me that I might start feeling jittery after the process, I felt like I was going to start tripping or something.  Very weird.

My diagnosis was confirmed, bronchitis.  I was prescribed an inhaler, an antibiotic, an anti-inflammatory, and the worst tasting cough syrup on the planet.  I then had to figure out this whole payment thing since I’m unemployed (gosh that’s scary to say).  Total cost of the visit and the 4 scripts, $53.  Much better than I thought it’d be and they fill your scripts on site!  Now that’s cool!  I got out of the doctor’s office at 11:32am.  I was there nearly 3 hours and I missed the PT class.  I texted President Travis and filled him in and when I got home I e-mailed Kathy and Mike with the results and then heated up some old chicken and green beans.  Nick got home an checked on me and we were back out the door after he showered.

We covered two topics today. One instructor was an FBI Agent that looked like Sean Astin in Rudy and the other was ranger who took the class at NAU two years ago and has already achieved full time status at the Grand Canyon.  That’s cool!  Also cool, we’re the last class at NAU to do the first topic today, identification.  At one point of the class, some guy walks into the room and asked the instructor if he was Eric and then left.  The two were actually in cahoots and we had to describe the guy to the instructor a few minutes later.  The only thing I remembered about the guy was that he looked like a hybrid of a skinny Jeff Bridges and Brian Balldinger from the NFL Network.  For the second half of class we practiced writing tickets.  It was the most responsive I’ve been in class and I think it’s because of the drugs.

After class, Nick made rice and chicken for dinner and I got cracking on my essay test that’s due Monday.  I got an e-mail from my dad saying that my super dog, Casey, was heading into the vet to get all kinds of surgeries done. I got ready for bed but not before watching the newest Glee and screwing around on iTunes.

Two More Days to the Weekend

I love our late days.  If Nick didn’t ask me if I wanted to go out to lunch I would’ve stayed in bed all day, minus the morning shower.  We tried meeting up with Travis at Subway by campus, the place was a zoo! The line was almost out the door. We waited 5 minutes and I think only 2 people checked out.  We were pressed for time and I needed to eat something fast because I took my meds before we left without any food.  Medicine side effects: make you nauseous, anxious, and sensitive to the sun.  I was feeling all that and I needed food stat.  The only serviceable option was McDonald’s.  Works for me.  Like most people, Travis & Nick hate McDonald’s yet I think I ended up eating less than them.  I’m not sure if its because I’m sick or because I don’t want to get derailed from this whole weight loss trip I’m on but I didn’t eat the Golden Arches like I used to.  I murdered my Big Mac but then just stopped.  I normally get a dollar menu sandwich with the meal and put in work on all of it ASAP.  Not today.  The Big Mac alone did it for me.

How do you think Nick feels about the line at Subway?

The guys started talking about guns so I zoned out, before I knew it it was 20 to 1 and we had to go.  I wasn’t crazy about the instructor we had today because he’s the type that calls on everybody in the class to make sure everybody’s participating.  I hate that!  So today I took the power out of his hands, I volunteered to answer questions.  HA!  My plan sort of backfired because I was later summoned to take part in the role playing exhibition in front of the class.  Practice interviews.  At first I was a “I don’t care about what happened” husband to the witness so I got to show off a little bit of my humor, then I was the interviewing officer and had to talk to a 14 year old son of beating victim.  Fun!  Wouldn’t ya know it; I got to throw out some of my humor there too. One of the techniques is to show interest in the interviewee’s hobbies; I was right there with him when Bryce said he plays Call of Duty.  When I asked him he “Prestiged” yet, the crowd…I mean class laughed.  Joking aside, I think it went very well and one of my classmates said she thinks I have a great personality to be a cop.  That meant a lot to me.

"I'm gonna see how close I can get to your car", says Nick as he pulls in behind me and then proceeds to rear end the J~DuB Mobile.  What an idiot!  No damage but there was a loud clank and my car shook.  I made dinner tonight.  Tilapia, whole wheat egg noodles, broccoli, and garlic bread, it was awesome.  I messed around on the computer and tried finding some training gear for the class.  In my travels I found out three very cool events that have absolutely nothing to do with training gear.

1.)    I found a possible theme song for our graduation slideshow...BE UNSTOPPABLE!

2.)    A friend that I’ve made through Laura just received a Purple Heart

3.)    One my classmate’s father is the Executive Director of Alaska Geographic and he was just interviewed on some news channel.  Very cool.

Good News I Failed to Mention
Mr. Stone, Laura’s dad, recovered nicely from his time in the hospital with the blood clots.  He was released on Saturday and has since returned to work.

Another Reason I Love the Show Spartacus
It validates my Man Card so I can get away with watching Glee without feeling like a fruit loop hahaha

Flagstaff Observation
What’s with these Wals? Most of the Walmarts by me in NJ close at some point; they aren’t open 24 hours whereas all of the Walgreens are…those stores flip-flop out here in Flagstaff.

Okay, so you guys are all caught up.  What a week it’s been huh?  Can’t wait for this weekend! I didn’t do anything the last time we were off but it’s been a long 12 days since then so I gotta do something.  There’s talk about going bowling or playing pool.  I want to see the new Adam Sandler movie, and there’s even talk about going down to Phoenix…maybe getting out of this altitude for a little while wouldn’t be such a bad thing.

Get Down With the Sickness

Hi.  This is my sporadic head's up that this blog is a little experiment I'm conducting as suggested by my friends and family back home in NJ while I attend a Wilderness First Responder, National Park Ranger Training Program, and soon to be added Wild Land Fire Training out in Flagstaff Arizona.  I've been here just over 4.5 weeks but it feels like a year already. With less than 11 weeks to go, here is my latest entry.

Tuesday Bluesday

Tuesday is quickly becoming one of my favorite days of the week…nothing to do until about noon which is when I start getting ready for class.  I talked to Laura early in the morning and found out she was having a terrible day.  Among other things, her father had to go to the hospital due to the presence of blood clots in his leg.  It’s days like today that make being out here rough.  The latest updates say he’ll be okay but he has to hang in the hospital for a couple days for observation.  Keep him in your thoughts.

Prior to the start of class, it was brought to our attention that we’re in store for a very long weekend at the school’s gym.  We’ll have our normal PT at 10am, which according to our syllabus involves a 1 mile run, then we’ll be staying at the gym for the start of our class at 1 but instead of ending at 5 we’ll be ending at 7.  What will we be doing there you ask?  Friday kicks off our exciting final weekend of Defensive Tactics, which ends with us fighting our instructors and then taking our first written/computer exam.  That’s kind of a bummer hahaha.  What wasn’t a bummer was that we got to meet our class “mascot” today, a Burmese Mountain Dog whose name I didn’t get but it’s apparently Kathy’s dog.  Her husband was our instructor today.

I didn’t do a whole lot after class.  Throughout the day my fellow classmates talked about cold tomorrow is going to be, somewhere around -30 degrees with the wind chills.  The temperatures tonight already started heading that way and the wind was really picking up.  For a change of scenery, I did a bit of studying and I read more of our required reading out in the living room.  One eerie story involved a cop being summoned to his parents’ house as requested by his father, the reason, his father wanted his son to see him kill himself. YIKES!  There’s a story in that book that takes place in NJ, kind of up by Laura’s new crib and it involved a 4Runner. It involved an officer, who looks like he could be related to an old co-worker of mine, whose passenger side approach saved his life.  I have only 3 chapters left to read and I’m done with only the…..3rd or 4th book I’ve ever read before in my life.

My brain was tired from the new stimuli that were on the pages of that book so I retired to my room for the night.  I love that as outdated as Netflix can be, it gets the new episodes of Spartacus up right after they air on TV!  That is quite possibly my favorite show right now…competing for my favorite of all time.  The Shield still holds that honor but if I could understand the characters’ names in Spartacus it would be a much closer race.  I also watched the Demetri Martin and one of his skits was about which 3 people in the world/history would he want to have dinner with…I fell asleep thinking about who mine would be…still can’t think of any.

Gotta get some rest, long day of freezing my butt off tomorrow.

Night Night.

Baby It’s Cold Outside

Just looking outside I knew today was going to be no good.  The week’s worth of snow we were supposed to have was reduced to only a couple of hours that I talked about in my last post, but that didn’t matter with the ripping winds you could hear through the walls of our house.  I was super bundled up for PT today, one of the things we were supposed to do was a 20 minute run outside.  My hamstring was still super achy from Monday’s sprint so I wasn’t even sure if I’d be running today. When we got my car the thermometer read 2˚.  Are you kidding me!?!?!? There’s no way I’m running outside in this….the wind was killer, it was easily -20˚.

That's Cold

When we got into class we soon found out that we weren’t going to be running outside…that was bit of a relief….or was it.  I’ve said it time & time again, I’d rather do sprint training than distance running any day of the week.  Well today we got a new routine thrown at us.  It’s called AMRAP, As Many Rounds As Possible.  Now you can do this with any exercises but for our purposes we were doing pushups, situps, squats, and sprints….for 20 minutes.  One round consisted of 5 pushups, 10 situps, 15 squats, and a sprint down the tennis court and back. Considering Mike just threw this together he wasn’t sure how many rounds we’d be able to do but he figured 10 would be a good number…that’s what I got and that was about the average.  The first 2 – 3 rounds went relatively smooth but when your gasping for air and you’ve gotta do sit-ups...well let’s just say it’s very tough; it felt like my stomach was a bagpipe and my wheezing was the music coming out of my mouth.  After our AMRAP certain members of the class were pulled aside if they failed any part of the PEB last week and Mike gave us some tips on how to improve and then we went and lifted.

We scrambled home, the temperature got up to 5˚ and I think getting all worked up inside and then going out into those temperatures may have proven to be costly later in the day.  I had my gym bag packed for a quick change and go back out after class but I soon realized I wouldn’t be making the go back out after class portion of the day. I made a Healthy Choice Café Steamer but could only eat half of it, threw the other half out. Uh oh! The cleaning lady came today but I think she skipped vacuuming my room. Nick wanted to drive separate today because he had gym plans of his own. Fine by me, I got to pump my “Ultimate Gym CD” that I was getting ideas for over the weekend.

Class was interesting today, the topic…Human Relations and Interpersonal Communication…right up my alley.  Our instructor was a NAU police officer who is also into this Crossfit craze.  As with most of our instructors we had to go around the room and introduce ourselves; today’s exercise had a twist.  We had to introduce ourselves and then ask the person next to us a question, before introducing ourselves we had to answer our other neighbor’s question.  The kicker, nothing we said had to be truthful and there was a prize for the best question and best response.  The questions ranged from political analysis, to the last time you went cow tipping, to how many licks it takes to get to the center of Tootsie Pop.  Eric asked me how many 7-Elevens have I been to…he must be a fan of this blog hahahaha.  I began my response with a question to the class, are there any 7-Elevens in Flagstaff?  My response to his question was 5,600.  IDK.  Then I got to introduce myself.  Kept it serious for a second, I’m from New Jersey, I like playing basketball, I was a semi-pro Texas Hold’em player until I found out we can’t do that as park rangers….then I honed my inner Step Brother.  “I work at a college as a janitor, I feel like I’m smarter than everyone in the class, I’ll see an equation on the board and I’ll go ahead and finish it…” at this point the class laughing so much that I can’t talk over them, most of them knew what I was talking about.  About 20 seconds later I was able to finish with “my best friend is Ben Affleck. I like doing karate in the garage and making music videos on my dad’s boat”.   I followed that up with my question to Josh…”On a scale of 1-26, after today’s PT, how unstoppable do you feel?”  Got a couple more laughs and Josh failed to give us a number.  I should’ve said…”since you have the same flash drive (which I got b/c I didn’t think anybody else would have anything like it), the same folder, and you’ve adopted my initials….exactly how bad do you want to be me?” When Josh was done he asked Travis “who is the one person in pop culture that he would vomit on”.  Travis’ response...me… because I would laugh it off to which I interjected…”why not, Brad already did” hahahahahahahaha.

IRONY – somebody asked Nick if he could have dinner with any 3 people who would they be?  Ha!  That was on the Demetri Martin episode I watched last night!

The first part of this video was my introduction about myself, excuse the naughty language that follows.

This little exercise took up nearly the entire first hour of class which meant break time.  I’m not sure what happened but when we came back from our first break I began feeling super sick.  I felt weak, I was fighting the urge to cough and my nose started running.  Before the end of class I was starting to sweat. At the end of class I got super bundled up, balaclava and all and made my way back to my car when I was soon joined by Kathy who was making the same trip.  She talked to me a bit about how the class was going and asked if it ever got this cold in NJ.  It doesn’t.  On the way home I saw something else you don’t experience in New Jersey, a dude drive his quad ATV around on the street as if it were a car or a regular motorcycle!  This place is so weird. Also while on my way home I called Baby Jimmy because nobody else would appreciate my Step Brothers rendition like he would so it was cool to catch up with him.  Just as I got home, Laura called me with an update on her father and I got a cool work story out of her today as well!  She’s a hero!

When I got off the phone I started more and more sick but Jane made me feel a little bit better.  I walked into the kitchen and she informed me that she thinks I’ll be a great leader one day. I asked her to elaborate and she said something along the lines of I have a way of calming people down and that’s a good leadership trait.  She also said that people respect me but not through fear and that I’ll impress superiors down the road.  The compliment came out of nowhere but I’ll take it.  J

Jane & I both needed to make a grocery store run but it was too cold to go outside, I think there was actually a warning about going outside and we wouldn’t even go out to check the mail.  Since I couldn’t go out I made some Ramen and Jane had tofu & spinach and I threw some spinach in with my Ramen.  I sat and ate with Jane.  She was apprehensive about tomorrow because she was going to court to serve as an interpreter, something she’s never done in court before.  She teaches sign language people. I was feeling worse so I headed to bed.  I fell asleep around 7 but I woke up throughout the night, feeling like I did that night at Rath’s house…if you recall my very first post.  I was shivering like a mad man, even though I was in sweats and under 4 blankets with both the house heat and my heat fan blowing on me.  At one point I even said, “I need the power of Indy” as I put the Indy blanket on closest to me.  I took all kinds of different meds; something broke the apparent fever as I went from being super cold to burning hot.  I continued to cough all night and go in and out of sleeping and waking up.

During one of my being awake spells I checked out the site where we find the ranger jobs and I took a shot by searching for New Jersey as the location.  Wouldn’t you know it, the very job that I applied for that said I needed to have a Seasonal Law Enforcement Type II Certificate which brought me out to Arizona, the same job that I was so mad at myself for missing the application cutoff date  when I finally got settled out here, reopened earlier in the day.  SCORE!  I was so excited that I had to text Laura…which I immediately felt bad for considering it was 2:30am back east.  Upon further review, one of the requirements to be considered for the position is having a Wild Land Fire (fighting) certification.  This is an optional training that NAU offers and most of the ranger class is taking and its only 4 days long.  The only drawback is it’s the first 4 days of Spring Break which is when Laura was planning on coming out to visit.  Bummer.  On the bright side, I’ll be gaining 3 certifications that make me more like Superman in just 4 months…and I’ll still have 3 days off for Spring Break but before I get carried away I had to make sure there was room left in the class.

At any rate, I’ll talk to Laura about that tomorrow.

I Can’t Be Sick

There isn’t much to report about today. I woke up feeling super hot and dry at some points and then freezing, coughing, and sneezing at other times.  At one point I woke up and saw I had an e-mail from this job site regarding one of the parks I applied to, the one in Manassas, Virginia.  As it turns out I didn’t score high enough on my self-assessment questionnaire which is funny because just last night I was telling Laura that I thought I’d score high on it because of my experience in the security field and as a park ranger. This was one of my feeler jobs so I wasn’t too broken up.  The goal is a season in NJ and then full-time in Philly.

I got out of bed around 8 and tried taking a long hot shower, that’s when I got my first nosebleed in over a year!  It just came out of nowhere.  I thought the shower would make me feel a little better but when I got out I was colder than ever so I jumped into some more sweats and buried myself in bed.  I couldn’t be the second guy to miss class due to illness and then ask somebody to Skype me in…we use our laptops as notebooks in class.  I wanted to sleep so bad but it was a struggle at first.  I slept until 1130 and I felt like I could make it through class.  Good thing I did because another one of my classmates sent out an e-mail saying he would be absent and requested a classroom Skype session.  I hope my going to class doesn’t mess me up for this action packed weekend.

I got out of bed and informed Nick I was sick, he wanted to drive separately so he doesn’t catch the illness that is plaguing the class.  I made a turkey sandwich but could only eat half of it and just as I was about to leave early for class my nose started bleeding again.  Right then and there I almost “called out” but I sucked it up and made my way to class.  It was much warmer today than yesterday so since I felt super hot, I drove to class with my windows down.  I tried my best to avoid everybody in class, nobody wants to be sick.  If I talked near somebody, I covered my mouth.  Each break I went into the bathroom and tried coughing and spitting up all of this grossness.  It was in the bathroom that I noticed just how sick I was.  I untucked my shirt and saw that I had sweated through not on my t-shirt but my uniform shirt as well.  FEVER!  It was a strange fever because I didn’t feel hot at all but I sure was sweating.

We handed in our resumes for our first test grade and I thought I’d get a 100% for sure considering I submitted my resume last week so it would look good for these jobs I’m applying to and I made the corrections Kathy suggested.  There were some items I had questions about but she didn’t correct them so I figured they were good.  Turns out, they weren’t.  I got 47/50.  The grade doesn’t matter because I’m not a credit student but still, I handed this in early for this purpose.  Our instructor today is the kind of guy that likes to just randomly pick people to participate in class and my superior psychic/behavior analysis skills were sharp today.  I listed in my brain the people he would pick on and I nailed every one of them in order…including myself.  Due to my illness, the class seemed to drag even more and at some points I felt like I was going to have to leave.  My coughing had to annoy the class and by the end of the class my nose was running.  I was remedying that situation when during one of my instructor’s stories he said one of the guys in the story was my size…plus 70lbs.  Everyone turned and looked at me mopping up the snot coming out of my nose, the first time it ran all class.  I was miserable.  During one of the breaks Laura texted me and told me she got “house warming” package I sent her.  Finally!  It only took 2 weeks! I also received word that the Wild Land Fire Course is only half full. Those made me feel a little better.

After class I decided I was going to brave the grocery store and enhance my medicine bag.  Remembering Jane needed cornmeal, I was going to just pick it up for her even though I figured she would’ve picked it up after work.  Guess who I saw leaving the Safeway parking lot as I was pulling in.  You guessed it, Mama Jane!  Am I psychic or what?  Remember back when I used to say I always feel like I’m going to run into somebody I know when I’m out at places.  Well if you don’t count my passing Jane in the parking lot then you have to count my running into Arkansas inside the store! Hahaha. I stocked up on some of the healthy foods that Mike told us get, almonds, avocado, chocolate milk, etc. picked up some meds, and grabbed a rotisserie chicken for dinner….I’m addicted. First time I spent money in a week! When I came home I had a package on the living room table...MORE AUNT PAM COOKIES! Woo Hoo!!!! Nick was making his dinner already and asked if I wanted some mac & cheese.  Boy did I!  We combined powers once again.  We live on Bird’s Eye frozen veggies but we always get the mix bag that has carrots.  Nick hates carrots so I just got broccoli..always looking out for that roomie of mine.

Dinner was awesome, got some laundry going.  Nick left to go do some studying.  I printed out the section of our notes that our written test will be on on Sunday and began watching Step Brothers. Love that movie.

We got a very busy weekend ahead of us and then after that there’s only 5 days until we have a weekend off.  We’ll be learning some MMA tactics, similar to those we covered at the MCPS Academy I’m sure.  We’ll be pushed to the brink of exhaustion and then forced to fight for our lives. Finally, we’ll be tested on all of it.  Catching the Super Bowl at Granny’s Closet on Sunday is sounding very good right about now.

GO STEELERS!!!!!!

Some News From Home

Many of the readers are well aware that every summer we have fundraiser in memory of my mom at the Lakewood BlueClaws.  The past two years this event was held on 4th of July Weekend.  Well you will all be pleased to know that this year's game will not be held on 4th of July Weekend, the game was moved back to July 8th.  You now have 6 months to coordinate your plans to be there hahaha.

Dog Gone End to the Weekend

Wha Cha Gon Do?
It’s Sunday, our last day off before cramming in another 12 straight, so I decided I was going to totally take the day off.  No gym, no running, nothing!  Today marks my 1 month anniversary out here in Flagstaff, so it’s mine & Nick’s 1 month anniversary as well.  Congrats to Travis & Arkansas on their 1 month anniversary out here in Flag as well.  My overactive brain had the rest of me in a foul mood.  I caught up with Laura for a little bit, actually it was one of our longest conversations out here.  We talked a bit about our airport farewell and she suggested some things I could do to keep myself distracted out here and then I worked on my previous blog post...up until our early dinner time.

For about a week, Arkansas was planning a Cajun meal dinner party for a couple of us and her landlady.  Since we secured a location for our optional defensive tactics practice we had to up our anticipated dinner time to 3pm.  I stopped loafing around and grabbed my duty belt, Nick grabbed the cupcakes he made, and the Bad Boys were en route.  Not knowing much about Arkansas’ hood I suggested we locked our duty belts in Nick’s trunk…after I offered to drive.  I only offer that information because of what happened next.

(I hope Nick doesn’t beat me up for this but) There’s a 4-way stop around the corner from our house that we drive through every day on our way to school.  Just about every time we drive on through we see the same female police officer…it’s like clockwork.  We get to the intersection and hardly paused up at the stop sign and I looked up the hill…there she was.  “There’s your friend”, I announced.  I saw her hands start turning the steering wheel and she pulled away from the curb. “…and she’s moving.  I hope you stopped long enough.” I added.  “Me Too”, Nick sheepishly responded.  I saw her turn in our direction, behind another car, and she hit her lights.  Nick knew his goose was cooked.  The other car was easily 200ft behind us and they pulled over, Nick didn’t wait.  The officer was nowhere near us but we were waiting for her.  All I could think about was what we’d say to Kathy…if we have any kind of interaction with a law enforcement officer we have to bring it our program director’s attention.  The officer was super “nice” and professional, noting the expression on Nick’s face that resembled that of a dude who just ate a grapefruit immediately after getting kicked in the nuts, I tried reassuring him that this was valuable experience but he was just concerned about the money.  I had to hand her my ID as well but I wasn’t sweating it; Nick slid in the “we’re in the Park Ranger Program” when asked if he was currently living in Illinois….smoooooth.  He only got a written warning…which I’ve never seen before but it provided a bit of entertainment.  One of the sections they fill out on the warning is “Driver Description”; the officer simply put “Sad”. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha Now all three of the Double Ds have had some sort of a run-in with the law…but only Arkansas got a ticket…I thought girls were supposed to get away with these things?

We got to Arkansas’ place and these two black dogs were barking at the gate next to the house.  They were barking their heads off but I didn’t care, my longing for dog contact drove me right to the fence and they started licking my hands.  Nick went in and I was locked out.  I rang the doorbell, “let me in”, I walked in, “now let the dogs in!” hahaha.  Their names are Benjamin & Katie and they look like a mama bear and her cub. These were the weirdest dogs I ever met; they never wanted to come inside.  I’d open the door and they’d run away from it so I’d go outside to hang with them.  Again they ran from the door but as soon as I got outside they acted like they’d known me for years.  Benjamin, the big one, would run to me and then lick my face nonstop…gross hahaha.  They were very jealous of each other and Katie loved biting Benjamin’s tail which led to lots of growling and wrestling.  I felt at home.

Meet Katie

They would only wrestle on this deck...I guess its their "ring".

Benjamin...he licks a lot.

Don't they look like wolves that got into the backyard!?!?

Arkansas had been busy cooking all day.  She had Shrimp Creole and some rice working hard and Travis showed up with a giant pot of his homemade pasta salad with eggs that just might be able to rival my sister Katie’s tuna-noodle casserole. Everything was delicious!  I hope I can learn to cook like these dudes someday.  Travis did say something I find humor in every time I hear it…which is a lot.  I was outside with the dogs and everybody else sat down to eat, when I came inside and made my plate I started singing “Rice Rice Baby too cold.”  Travis observed “You can turn anything in your life in a song can’t you?” hahahahahaha.  We BS’d after dinner until it was time to head to D-Tac.

Nick, Travis, & Arkansas bout to chow down.

The cool thing about the place we did our practice D-Tac was that I got to walk by the court where the Lumberjacks play their BBall games and some of the players were there shooting around. We met up with some of our classmates in the hallway and it looked like only 6 or 7 of us would be attending. We were waiting in the hallway until 6 so everybody would know where to go, considering our classroom was down a super dark hallway.  Six o’clock came and we headed in…our group more than doubled in size as more of our classmates were waiting inside.  For a second I had an hallucination that the group was my circle of friends that attended my surprise going away party before I left.  Get a grip J~DuB.  By the time we got going we had a solid group of 17 and many of us had a solid grasp on our handcuffing techniques and it was clutch ping-ponging the concepts we haven’t covered in a week.  This method of reviewing as a class was cool, more and more of my classmates started coming out of their shells.  At the end of the session everybody wanted to do a little team huddle for me to belt out the “1-2-3 UNSTOPPABLE!” cheer which also made my day. When exiting the room and heading down the dark hallway I pointed out to two of my classmates that this walk would be good practice for our building searches that we’ll be doing near the end of the semester.  I’ve told you guys before…I’m good at this stuff.  Lauren said, “You’re right there could be somebody right there” (behind a cement pillar). With my imaginary gun & flashlight I checked the corner and there was Arkansas & Nick, patiently waiting with vengeance on their minds…waiting to scare me.  I scared the tar out of them about a week ago and I wished I caught it on video.

Stan practicing a search on Josh, taking off the sock HA.

There was talk about everybody going out for pizza afterwards but those plans flopped so Nick invited Arkansas over for cupcakes.  We hung out with Jane & Jim and pretty much parted ways for the night…but I did manage to get one more scare of my Double D running mates hahaha.  I was up watching Family Guy on Hulu, took a shower, got nice text from Brother DuB and then I dozed off.

Hasta La Vista, Weekend

What better way to come back from our first weekend off then to look out my bedroom window and see all of this white stuff...snow I think it’s called…falling from the sky and building up on the ground.  Luckily I was already in a good mood from the dream I had right before I woke up.  For some reason one of the casinos back home mailed me $52,136 cash!  The money was sent some sort of plastic disc that was normally designed to play some sort of table pool game so I had to call my sister Katie to ask her what it meant…she said “It means you’re rich!” Working through the dream was pretty funny; I was like conscious or something.  I couldn’t figure out who to tell, or if it was even real.  I sat on my new found fortune for a while and could hear my internal conflict about who to tell.  I called Laura and told her and we immediately felt relieved as things were about to get a lot easier for us.  Some dream huh?

I was dreading going to PT today because I figured we were going to get our asses kicked in the form of running since we were off all week.  Chuck checked in on me via text and that sort of made the morning more bearable. We got an early jump on our trip thanks to the snow that was teetering down, causing the roads to be fairly slick.  Right before warm-ups I suddenly felt sick to my stomach.  It was weird; maybe too much Cajun shrimp.  I made it through warm-ups and my breathing was alright then Mike threw us a curveball…we went right into lifting instead of running.  Stan and I did shoulders and biceps and I was able to do one more dip than last time…MOUNT UP!!!  After lifting we finally had a useful lecture.  Mike covered machines v. free weights and he finally offered some of the nutritional advice he’s been promising us.

Here’s a little nutritional advice: Best thing to drink after an intense workout: chocolate milk.
Eat a lot of green vegetables if you’re trying to lose weight.  They have better stuff than whole wheat products and keep you fuller longer so you eat less.   You’re welcome.

After our lecture we had some sprint training, 50 –yd sprints.  It was pretty much human drag racing. Considering we went from warming up, to lifting, to sitting down for a lecture we probably weren’t in the best state to run.  I took off against Curtis and about 20yds into the run I pulled up lame like Darrelle Revis did when Randy Moss burned him for that touchdown around the time the whole “slouch” comment came out.
You can kind of see Revis limp at the end of this play. If my memory serves me correctly, he left the game after this and I think he missed a few games after this.  Wimp...I toughed it out and ran.

It’s almost comical that these cramps or knots or whatever these leg injuries are keep happening to me.  At the same exact time, the outside of my left hamstring and my right quadriceps seemed to explode.  I somehow finished 2 more sets but I was in pretty intense pain, that’s the only reason Nick beat me in my second run and I’m sticking to it. Class ended and we were able to sneak in another team huddle for our 1-2-3 UNSTOPPABLE cheer but it wasn’t so well received. I noticed that those against it were absent for our practice session yesterday…take it how you want it.

When we headed to the car after class you couldn’t even tell that it snowed in the morning.  People have said that the snow melts as fast as it falls here and now I got to see it firsthand.  It almost felt like spring…by campus.  When we got back home it was still snowing.  I guess living at the base of a mountain will do that.  Despite our nutritional speech, I had some leftover wheat egg noodles and turkey burger meat for lunch, showered, and was actually ready to go before Nick was for a change.  Class was a bit boring, in our instructors words, and afterwards Nick joined up with his gym crew so I drove home by myself. I brought in the mail, which had the last two tax forms I was waiting for enclosed (sort of, the envelope was ripped to all hell) in it and then I began defrosting some chicken for dinner and jumped in the bathroom before getting changed out of my uniform.  I was in the bathroom when I heard Jane getting a little frantic.  I came out the kitchen and she excitedly exclaimed, “Everybody’s coming over for dinner…like soon.”  I didn’t know who everybody was until I found out it was an entire family dinner to celebrate a birthday.  What a good time to learn a thing or two about cooking!  Maybe not. Jane was a little pressed for time but I did learn a cool method for chopping up onions!

Before we knew it the family walked in and took over the kitchen, I finished my onions and then what appeared to be a team of professionals took over everything else.  Considering I really only know how to make mac & cheese or any strange concoction of tilapia or chicken with green beans and wheat pasta, I was more than impressed to see that Jane’s daughter’s, Mandi, boyfriend, Josh, began making Caesar dressing from scratch!  I wanted to give them all some family time so I headed to my room and banged out my taxes online.  For some reason it seemed to take a really long time this year and my absence at the dinner table was no longer unnoticed.  To file online I had to call an IRS number to get a pin # and while I was following all the automated directions I was summoned to dinner a few times; I was called twice when my pin was being recited to me so I couldn’t respond back to them and I had to try to bury my head so I could hear the computer lady over them hahaha.

When I came out to dinner Jane finally got some revenge on me, she told me that they were all waiting for me to eat and I immediately felt horrible even though I had my doubts that they would ever wait that long to eat. We had vegetable lasagna, salad, and garlic bread and I had some vanilla ice cream and passed on the cherry (soup) pie.  It was cool seeing the family all hanging out and cutting on each other, reminded me of my family on Christmas Eve I told Jane.  The kids’ father was a real nice guy, HE WENT TO RUTGERS, and it was the first time I got to meet Jane’s son, James.  She says he’s a dweeb because he never comes to visit ha!

After everybody left I helped Mama Jane clean up and talked to her a little bit about the mysteries of women…because you broads are something else.  I thought I had you all figured out in the past but the older I get the more I realize that I don’t know sh!t!!!  Jane sympathized with me and every other guy out there hahahaha.

1 day down, 11 more to go til a day off.

1pm start tomorrow

Good Night

Flagstaff Observation
1.       What’s with the windshields?  Nick and I live the furthest from campus of everybody in our class and we pass I think 4 auto glass places on the way.  A week or 2 ago I asked him why he thought there were so many and he thinks it’s because of the falling rocks from the mountains.  Interesting.
2.       Snow melts as fast as it falls. I pointed this out before but it’s pretty crazy how true it is.  I’m sure we’ll get buried sooner or later but if you looked outside right now you’d have no idea that we had a bit of a winter wonderland at 9am this morning.
3.       I miss Wawa & 7-Eleven.  The convenience stores here aren’t very convenient. They’re called K or something…I’m not sure what that stands for but it should be an S for sucks.  Hey, at least they sell alcohol.

Inspire Me, Inspire You
1.       Two of my classmates noted my weight loss…it’s niiiice.
2.       Brian’s text message late Sunday Night started out by letting me know that he’s proud of me.  Through my blog he’s recognized all of the hard work I’ve been putting in out here and that he looked forward to me “showing him the ropes” when I get back.
3.       Following suit, when I got out of PT this morning I had a text from my younger sister, Maureen, saying she headed back to the gym for the first time since her pre-wedding days thanks in part to this blog. Go get it M~DuB!
