Training at Home v. Training Out Here

Wow, more people read this little experiment then I ever thought would…what’s up everybody?

Running is Not Fun

Thank God It’s Friday!  To most of you Friday means the end of the week.  Your tough 5 day stretch of working, running kids to school, attending school yourself, or doing nothing and waiting for your friends to have a couple days off so you have somebody to play with…whatever the case may be.  This particular Friday kicked off a challenging 4-day stretch of physical exertion for us rangers in training.  As every Friday from now on will go, today was PT day. On Wednesday we were given the heads up that we’d be running our 1.5 miles today so I was a little anxious getting up this morning.

I dressed a little less on the bundled up side, grabbed some of those Powerade gels I love so much and Nick & I were out the door. Figures, I dress down a little bit and it’s just under 30 degrees this morning. Brrrrrr.  On our way in we saw something that I don’t remember ever seeing in person before in my life…some dude got pulled over by a cop in the gas station I desperately needed to hit up on the way home and the officer had him behind his truck, in cuffs, and was searching the driver.  This was a precursor for things to come.  I remembered to throw my ID in my clipboard this time but ended up not needing it as my shirt & last name served as enough ID…imagine that! When I walked into the gym a lot of my classmates were stretching and already bumming about having to run today.  Here’s a fun observation; more than 1/3 of the class was dressed the way I was on Wednesday…you know the way everybody made fun of!  Hahahaha sheep. j/k.

I don’t know what is going on with me but I don’t think I’m messing with the energy gels or drinks for awhile.  Our instructor warmed us up and we got two warm up exercises in and I couldn’t breathe.  Granted I’m not in XC runner shape but I was training at home before I got here and I’ve always been able to run, still fairly fast I might add.  I felt like my head was going to explode.  It might be the elevation but I’ve been here almost 3 weeks now…when does it get better?  More on that later. We got all of our warm-ups in and were supposed to go for a run outside, that changed to exploring the weight room with our partners.  If we combined my partner Stan and I into 1 person we’d probably be the most versatile student in the class.  I’m strong-ish and can take a pounding, he can run like a gazelle and is super flexible….both of our strengths are each other’s weaknesses…weird.  We had to do 1 set of an exercise for each body part so I was able to apply some of the exercises I learned back in high school with our lifting program for BBall and then incorporated bits & pieces from the Men’s Health magazines L~DuB got for me. About midway through our session I explained to Stan, “see I know what I’m doing I just have a hard time doing it and then continuing to do it.” Could imagine how much sexier I’d be if I did!?!?!  Hopefully that’ll all change over these next 3 months.  While all of this was going on we got a sneak peek at the PEB (police exercise battery) we’ll have to complete in order to graduate; a former student was making his up while we were training so we saw his bench press, sit & reach, and the almighty 1.5 mile run.

Our 1.5 mile run was supposed to be a confusing trek around campus but somehow we were able to finagle our way onto the track.  Sounds good right? Wrong!  We had to jog across campus to get to the track itself, somewhere between a quarter mile & a half mile.  When we arrived, the former student was wrapping up his 1.5miles and the instructors told us to run with him.  Apparently that was to show our support but I missed memo; I thought it meant we had to just take off and do our 1.5 mile run…I was even more confused when some of the faster dudes ran across the football field to catch up with him.  “That’s not legal”, I thought.  So I’m halfway through the lap and the kid’s done along with the faster runners from our group and I think to myself, man there’s a lot of people behind me.  I turned around…NOBODY was behind me!  Apparently the support run was optional but you know me, I’m a good soldier and I follow orders.  I open my stride up and my breathing got even heavier.  By the time I caught up to our class, I had about 10seconds to catch my breath and we were off and running.

I thought I’d have a little more spring in my step but I was hurting…big time!  I wasn’t the only one apparently as some of the students started walking during the first lap.  For those of you that might not know, 1.5 miles is 6 laps around a standard track.  Of our timed run, I ran a total of 5 laps and walked a total of 1.  I kid you not, this was the most scared I’d ever been in my life.  While running I was opening my mouth to take in oxygen (I know it should be through my nose) but NOTHING felt like it was coming in.  My lungs felt dry, my lips were completely dry, and I felt that if I didn’t walk & try to control my breathing that I was literally going to die right there.  One funny thing about this whole run, I got lapped by a few people and even though I was “scared”   and couldn’t breathe, I cheered them on and reassured them that they “had this”. Hahahaha

People say it’s the elevation that kicked my ass.  Back home in Freehold the elevation is 178ft above sea level, it’s over 7,000ft here!  Like I said, I was running at home and I had this 1.5mile down below the 13minute mark…not a spectacular time but even that was an improvement from where I was when I started training.  Between my walking and running I finished in 16.5 minutes; for me to pass the PEB I need to clear it in 13:57.  It was a dry run so I’m not even pissed about my time  What  I am pissed about is that I let myself utter something that I pride myself on never saying; I can’t!  Travis was 1 of the first ones done and he joined me to back me up on my last lap.  I crossed the starting point for my last lap and whatever was going on in my lungs was unbearable so I tried to speed walk for a little bit, it wasn’t helping.  “Let’s walk for a little bit and when we get to that line you’re gonna pick it up and finish this”, Travis urged me on.  “I can’t.  I can’t breathe.  When we get down to the bleachers. (roughly just past the 50yd line, we’re near the endzone)”.  I immediately blurted out, “I can’t believe I just said that!” With that, I began jogging again, we turned around the final bend and when we reached the straight away, I opened up my strides and was pumping my legs like a madman.  People were cheering me on from the field, some running alongside me; I burned by them and had complete tunnel vision going…I couldn’t see anything else but that finish line.  I walked nearly half another lap to try to cool down but I wouldn’t say a word to anybody that tried talking to me.  I was pissed and embarrassed about my cowardly response….and I didn’t have enough air flowing to get any words out. If somebody tried talking to me I just waved them away from me.  Travis, the determined little bugger he is, caught up to me and helped me with some breathing control techniques and those helped return me to normal.

Waiting for everybody to finish, class ran 5 minutes late so we now had an hour and 25 minutes to get back to gym, get our stuff, walk across the 2 parking lots to our cars and then I had to get gas because I was nearly running on fumes.  We went back to that same gas station where we saw the “bad boy” get busted…it was packed.  My second attempt to fuel up that was thwarted by overcrowding.  Time was precious so Nick would have to drive back for the class portion.  This was our second run at going home for lunch & shower between classes and it was a prime example as to why this routine will be very very old very very fast.  Our shortest/easiest route to this particular part of campus is through the downtown area.  As I’ve stated couple times, the drivers in Flagstaff suck.  To make matters worse, we were stopped at nearly every red light.  The only good thing about this trip home was I had the sense to see a mountain biker cut off the Ford Explorer in front of us in 1 of the 2 lanes we needed to make a turn near our house.  Good thing I did because that biker stayed in front of that Explorer nearly the entire way to our house, so I was able to make some moves and get us home.  It was 12o’clock which meant we had a half hour to shower, eat, get dressed in our uniforms and get back on the road for the 15minute car ride back to campus.  Neither of us really ate but that was poor planning on our part then it was back to school.  Nick got behind another crappy driver who couldn’t decide which lane she wanted to go in or whether or not she wanted to turn, so we passed her.  Some “Mexican National” lady had a truck full of kids, a common site back in NJ….minus the car, and the entire car was looking at us and muttering something to each other.  I stared right back at them; oblivious as to why they seemed so interested in our car…Nick later explained what happened.  I started to feel a bad cough coming on during our trip back…ah crap I can’t be getting sick!

Today’s class lesson was geared more toward present day rangering. It was the best classroom session so far as it was a little bit of an eye opener.  Our instructor was a Chief Ranger who had no law enforcement experience prior to doing a similar program that we’re doing…and she made learning fun…well a little lighter and more interesting.  We went around the room and introduced ourselves, where we’re from and talked about any relevant experience we had.  When it got to me I stood up and began talking about how awesome I am but I felt like the words weren’t coming out of my mouth.  It felt almost like I had some bronchitis in the works and it was effecting my throat…thankfully I’m okay.  It’s weird to say that today’s class was light or light hearted because it dealt with some very serious business.  It was mostly centered on deadly force and we were provided with a bunch of visual aids in the form of videos.  I’ve seen some of the videos before and others were new, all of them really made you think. Most of them were traffic stops which resulted in shootings and they really hit home in the wakes of Officer Chris Matlosz’s funeral back in NJ.

I’ve seen a dead body before but I’ve seen somebody actually die, not in a movie, once and even that was in a video similar to ones we watched today.  One of the videos today involved a man charging state troopers with a knife, the other one wasn’t seen but heard and it involved a cop that absolutely no control over a situation and you heard his final words over the camera recording the incident.  Both cases were very sad but one was an example of the troopers abiding by their training and the cop in the other one failed to abide by his training.  We can do this textbook stuff until we’re blue in the face but I’m curious to see what happens out in the real world when this is all over.

For you ranger trainees reading this...this is the video that we couldn't get to work in class.

Still worn down from the morning run, surprisingly nothing on my body hurt just my psyche and my lungs a little bit, I was looking forward to getting home and resting up for the next 3 days of D-Tac & PT.  Nick & decided to join Arkansas and another girl from our WFR course, “Alaska”, at one of the Mexican restaurants that we drive by everyday for dinner.  I don’t like Mexican food, this would be the 3rd time in less than 3 weeks that I ate it, and I wanted to try to save some money so I wasn’t going to go initially but I decided to go.  The food was cheap, they had American food too so I got some sort of weird steak sandwich that was nothing like I expected it to be and then we bounced. When we got home, I finally ran out and filled up my gas tank (spent the most I’ve spent on gas), got home and then laid in bed before falling asleep around 11.

One great surprise from today was when my former security brother Bill Domanow reached out to catch up on what was going on as he thought I was still at Holmdel Park.  We chatchitted for about 15 minutes and it was the first time we talked in probably a year.  He’s a good dude.

You guys didn’t adhere to my plea to send Nick stuff, in the one day you had to do so, and we pulled up to the house after school and he threatened me with violence if I had another package and he had nothing.  Well we pulled up to the house and guess who had another package and guess who had nothing! Ok it was me, I got the package and he got nothing.  Help the man out.

I also got a picture message from LK saying her cat Raleigh misses me….TAKE THAT GREG!

Big Wrists

Let’s see if you can guess how today’s Defensive Tactics session went if I give you this little piece of information.  When we got home, Nick opened the door and I turned off my car. Neither one of us got out of the car yet, and at the same exact time for the same exact duration we let out a collective sigh.  It was pretty funny.

Woke up dark & early this morning, 6:30, and it was time to get ready for our first 9hour day of D-Tac.  I kept having those paranoid “wake ups” all morning, about 3 an hour from 3am on, and I had what started out as a bad dream but turned into a very good dream right before I woke up.  I dreamt I was late to this class and I was going to be late to this very class and I could visualize the class’s response when I got there.  In my dream, Laura and I lived together and she made everything alright before I headed to class. Back to reality.  I woke up somewhat refreshed…or something.  I didn’t feel too groggy but when I got out of bed I had to laugh.  It amazes me that I clean my room in about 5 minutes but I can never keep it clean…in fact I practically destroy it.  Jane calls it the “boy gene”.  We got everything together; it was our first day with our Duty Belts! I had half of a plain toasted wheat bagel thin and we were out the door again.  Nothing exciting on the way to campus but I had a bit of a parking fail.  Paranoid of getting a warning or parking ticket, I parked in our usual lot.  It turns out parking passes are only necessary on the weekdays.

A cool thing about our D-Tac days, they’re held in the same classroom we had our WFR course in.  Nick & I were among the first ones there but we were locked out until the employee let us in.  We were “strongly encouraged” to show up a half hour early to help set up the judo mats but something told me complacency was going to set in amongst us.  Considering we’re held to higher standard in a formal law enforcement training program…it should pretty much click in everyone’s minds that they shouldn’t just leave their duty belts lying around…shouldn’t it?  I’m not sure why I didn’t say anything as a “head’s up” to my classmates but they weren’t reprimanded for leaving them around either.  I guess since it’s our first time with them things were a little lenient…at first.  We put the mats together like puzzle pieces and then helped our instructors bring in their equipment, kicked off our shoes and had a little bit of class time.  We reviewed some of the material from yesterday and met our new instructors, all of which are park rangers. Two of the instructors looked a lot like people I know.  If one of them were bald, he’d look very much like my friend that got me into this ranger business, Eric.  Another one almost looks like my cousin Steve…except he’s much taller and skinnier.

It was time to line up and practice our stances, strikes, and kicks.  The instructors would periodically come by with striking pads and we’d perform the move of the moment on them…it was pretty funny when we were doing snap kicks and the instructor held up the pad and said “you’re going to send me flying.”  My overall size would be brought up several times throughout the day.  Some of the movements were awkward even though they were basically the same strikes and stuff we did for the park ranger academy back home.  Everything was made worse by the fact that our socks were giving us no traction on the slick mats.  We were informed that we’d be doing all types of conditioning exercises in our D-Tac classes but, at least for today, it seemed like we only had to do them as a punishment type of thing for mistakes we made during the different techniques we were learning.

The instructors kept track of our mistakes with tally marks on a dry erase board, each tally marks was 10 reps of certain exercise.  Just as I predicted, at one point today we got 2 marks for people just leaving their training guns lying around, when they added the marks they warned us not to do the same with our duty belts.  Hmmm sound familiar?  Maybe I’ll hold a team meeting before class tomorrow and remind everybody to make our belts a part of our bodies or something like that. I don’t think it’ll do any good though since almost all…oh…24 of our marks came from us making the same two mistakes; the same improper command and improper positioning when the “suspect’ was in a certain position.  The cool thing about these instructors…even though we’re the ones being “punished”, they do the exercises right along with us.  I hope the rest of the class picks up on this and is a little more cautious with the mistakes tomorrow.

Since I don’t know who is reading these posts and I don’t want to give away too much information I’ll just tell you that D-Tac was very informative and may safe my life one day.  As I’ve said, some of the strikes and our defensive falls were the same as those covered at the Monmouth County Parks’ academy, although some were called different things, the rest of the training is a HELL of a lot better here.  Now I’m not bashing the MCPS by any means, but when the 4 instructors there have a (retired cop) student showing a class of almost the same size as the one here how to do handcuffing in a 5 minute block…that’s not going to cut the mustard.  Then again that class had people well into their 50s in it and we were essentially hired for visitor contacts and toilet cleaning. The instructors here are VERY helpful, patient, encouraging, and fun to work with. We did handcuffing for hours, not 5 minutes!

Other things we covered today included weapon recovery from a suspect with a visible weapon in their waistband and various holds/escorts of non-handcuffed suspects…all of which will be very helpful when I get back into the security game in NJ.  We had a rotation method for the suspects and when it was my turn, every one of the “officers” informed me that I had really big wrists. Hahaha.  As instructors helped my partners I was referred to as a bigger guy and on about 7 occasions they informed my partners that I’m not flexible enough in my upper body to get as good of an armbar on me for certain handcuff techniques…I told my partners “screw all that noise and really crank my shit til you get it where you think it’s right.”  Like I said, I can take a pounding. If only my back would get that memo.  It was only on the minor level but my back got real tight and I had to pay some attention to it, nothing a little ibupro can’t fix. That was the only thing I was afraid of hurting coming out here so keep that little sucker in your thoughts.

We got a late lunch break and I’ll never get over how cool this campus is.  Coming from a small state school that is commonly known as a “suitcase school”, it’s weird to see so much life on campus on the weekend.  Right across the sidewalk from our building is a small “food court” that has a Jamba Juice, and bagel place, an Asian food place, a Mexican food place, and a sub place that is a spitting image of Subway…and probably tastes better too.  I got to talk to my lady for the first time today and she just finished painting her new room at Stephanie’s place….YAY!!!!!  Also during lunch I ran into 2 guys from the WFR course, Sean and Derek the TA.  I didn’t really talk to either of them until around the Mock Scenario so it was cool to see what they were up to.  Sean was teaching some sort of program and Derek was doing nothing…as usual.  Hahahaha.

Tonight was very uneventful as we just sat around doing nothing outside of showering and Nick did a good job cracking my back.

Alrighty.  I’m sore, I’m tired, and I’m only halfway through these challenging 4 days so it’s time for bed...Maybe after all is said and done on Monday I'll hit up the jacuzzi at The Plex! At least we’ll get an extra half hour of sleep tomorrow since the mats are already set up.    The flip side to that is we’ll be staying longer which means I’ll see less of the Steelers thrashing of the Jets.  Hopefully we can find somewhere to go to at least watch the second half.

Goodnight Neverland!

Flagstaff Observations
1.)    There’s no Dunkin’ Donuts out here! I’ve been around the town a little bit now and if they exist out here, they are nowhere near as prevalent as they are in NJ.  I don’t really enjoy DD but there goes the chances of my dad ever moving out here…then again it could be a great franchise opportunity for him.
2.)    There’s no White Castle out here! Somebody else pointed this out to me, quite frankly I can only think of 2 in NJ and I don’t really eat that crap either but there goes the chances of my brother-in-law ever moving out here hahahahaha.
3.)    Museum Club – Our PT instructor said this is the best place in town to go on your nights off….this is that whacked out country bar we stopped by for an hour that one time.  This is the best place to go out here?!?!?!  Then again…that’s not really “my thing”…maybe I’ll give it a few more tries and I’ll come home with a pickup truck, cowboy hat, and tight ass jeans that ride up to my stomach.
1.)    I Miss All 4 of My Dogs – And my 2 cats, my 2 turtles, and my koi fish.
2.)    3 Weeks Down, 3 Months Left to Go – as of 1230pm EST on Sunday 1/23/11.

PT & Tacos

Tacos for the Boys
Around the time of my last post I decided to work a little bit more on my new hobby since gambling is frowned upon by the NPS, torturing Nick.  My roomie had to go out and purchase a new belt because both the one he had and the pants he got for the PRTP were too big.  Bless his soul, he was trying on his new threads and belt around the house.  “Dude, why are you still in your uniform?”, I inquired.  “I had to buy a new belt because the one I had was too big but I don’t think this looks right.”  His still too big pants were hiked up a little high so I responded, “Nah man you look official…..officially like Urkel.” Hahahahahahahahahahahaha. He didn’t find it funny.

Steve Urkel doing the patented Jeff Ward Dance

It’s Wednesday which means it’s PT day!  It’s our first PT day in fact so not many people knew what to expect.  I dressed the same way I did that night Nick & I went running around our hilly hood, Under Armour’d out on the legs, torso, & dome with my favorite pair of BBall shorts that matches our PRTP t-shirts…just as my knit hat did.  All ranger green baby.  I headed out to the kitchen to grab a water bottle and found another encouraging message from Jane.  I took the smallest swig and 5 hour energy, yech it was old (must be drunk or discarded 3 days after breaking seal) and grabbed a Powerade energy gummy (if you don’t know about those I suggest you get educated on them) & we were out the door but we had to make sure our bedroom doors were open so the vacuuming & dusting lady would do our rooms…she’d been MIA for weeks now.

Another Jane-ism. That cat is a post-it note telling us to enjoy our tacos.

Nick & I were very familiar with our new class location because we were meeting in the gym that used for a lot of WFR scenarios.  We got halfway to the building and I realized I left my student ID in my car and for some reason our shirts aren’t ID enough to get into the rec center…so I got a little workout in early running back to my car and then all the way through two parking lots and around the building to the front door.  That hurt.  The class was all huddling up by the cubbies in the gym and I immediately got it from some of my peers about my attire.  “What are you cold or something?” (It was like 52 degrees outside)  “Oh we can tell you’re from the city.” (that comment basically came from the fact that I was wearing baggy shorts….excuse me nut huggers).  My responses made everybody laugh so it was all good.  Travis, John (of WFR fame), just started ripping on each other and just a few quick observations I’ve made.  1.) I think Travis, John, Nick, or myself would make a very good Class President…but that’s just me being biased since I know them the best. 2.) I haven’t figured out which is funnier to watch…John get frustrated and he tries to voice it or when Travis gets embarrassed and turns red.  You’d have to see them to be the judge.

We spent most of the beginning of class standing around and talking about what we were expecting because our instructor, Mike, has to teach 2 classes in order for us to be able to reserve the building.  I took that time to try learn everybody’s names (I have them all!) and somehow stories of my patented dance moves, among other stories, leaked out…so naturally I made some more people laugh to help pass the time.   This is the first time I’ve done this and it’s even harder without seeing how we’re sitting in the classroom but here’s the names all 25 of my classmates go by.  As I’ve mentioned before there are 4 girls with very similar first names so I said none of them get ownership of that name so they are Arkansas, Texas, Carter & Hamilton and the other 2 girls are Christine and (I can’t spell it but) Terya. Then the WFR dudes, Josh, John, Travis, Brad, Pat, & Nick.  Then the guys I met at our meet & greet & Grand Canyon trip, Jake, Curtis (CJ), Sean, Owen, Nick Money (that’s his real last name!), Eric V. and Stan. Then lastly there’s all the guys I didn’t know before Tuesday: Matt, Eric N, Alex, Jacob, Forest, Brice, and finally…myself.  I bet nobody else can do that!  It’ll take me a while to get all of their states down but I know we got at least one more from Wisconsin in there, one from Utah, and one from Virginia.  Now that’s Class President material!

Due to time split with the classes our PT day was basically just an orientation day combined with a little bit of high school gym class.  We were broken off into pairs and I initially got partnered up with John but then he got traded and I got Stan; he’ll be my partner in crime for the next 13 weeks.  We were walked through the very very small area designed to be a weight room, which is an open area nestled at the end of the indoor track, then we made our way to the volleyball court for some stretching and workout techniques.  Whenever I go to the gym I only stretch my legs and when I do I usually only do the stretches my physical therapists showed me for my sciatica, so it was almost comical that stretching my upper body after two days of lifting to strengthen it hurt so bad.  Wanna know what hurt the most? (go ahead sing it…was being sooo close)  Remember those arm circle things you used to do in gym class? Stand up and put your arms out to the side in a T formation and then move them in a circular motion, starting small then getting much bigger…then doing it again the other way?  THOSE KILLED ME!  We did a couple of warm up exercises that reminded me of the circuits I used to do on the “No Ball” opening day of basketball tryouts in high school and then we worked a little bit on form.

We saw the kinds of pushups, situps, & burpies we’d be doing but I saw this next exercise coming months ago and I figured it’d be the focus of our workouts!  We were to work on a proper squat form and thanks to my compression pants, I couldn’t get low enough without really forcing it. Every time I stood back up I felt light headed…not good.  Before the end of class we did a circuit of squats, 20 seconds on, 10 seconds off, for 4 minutes.  The lowest amount of squats you could do in a 20 second period was your “score”.  My average was 11 but I stumbled one time so my score was 9.  The score to beat from the last class….23!  Daaaaaaaayyyyuuuuuuummmmmmmmm.   Afterwards everybody’s legs felt like jello and it was time for us to break for lunch.  We had an hour and a half before class started and needed to shower so Nick & I, after thinking the other went to the car ahead of the other thus delaying our departure, headed back home.  The cleaning lady, Bessie, was still a no show…what else is new.  Nick jumped in the shower and I made a sandwich then flipped out looking of my flashdrive that serves as my notebook for class…no luck.  We switched, I got dressed, and we were right back on the road again.  This is one routine that I see getting VERY old VERY fast.

We walked into class and our instructor of the day made his way around the class and introduced himself to everybody personally.  We were waiting for everybody else to arrive so the instructor asked, “Anybody know any jokes? Who’s the funny one in the class?”  Jake didn’t hesitate to offer my services, less than 60 seconds after I met the instructor, and a few eyeballs turned my way.  I drew a blank and I was let off the hook. ***If anybody knows any appropriate jokes hit me up so I can steal them***

Today’s lesson was a history lesson.  Yellowstone was the first national park.  That’s a nice tidbit for ya’ll. Some of you may have known that but here’s something I’m sure just about all of you didn’t know.  The reason why we have the kind of training that the NPS has today for rangers is because of an event involving HIPPIES!!!!  My security brothers pretty much have a similar distaste for hippies and this event would probably add fuel to that fire.  It was basically a riot but I’m not really sure who’s to blame but it resulted in better training for rangers so yaaaaaaaaaaaay us!

After class, we had to stop at the grocery store to pick up some meat & stuff for the tacos and I signed up for my little Safeway “Price Plus” card.  Yikes! I better not start planting any roots out here. We got home and it was time for more of my favorite new hobby…torturing Nick.  Nick has been waiting for a package to come for quite some time now, I’ve gotten a few in recent weeks and I’ve been expecting a few things to come in the mail.  We pull up to the driveway and Nick got excited because there was a box at our door.  I told him to go get it and I’d get the mail from the mailbox.  “It’s for you!” he yelled in disgust hahahahahahahahahahahaha.  To make matters worse I had mail in the mailbox too; a weatherproof field interview notepad. The box was from The Hoops so that meant only one thing…MAMA COOKIES!!!! That puts my mail/package count advantage to about 40:0 over Nick.  I don’t mean to make fun, its hard being away from home and everybody you love, so I said I’m going to mail him something.  I tore open the box and said dude you have to try one of these and handed him a cookie.

If you’re reading this and would like to cheer Nick up, send him ANYTHING:
Nick Poulos.

Flagstaff AZ, 86004

He’ll appreciate the gesture but don’t forget about me…I love mail….just go easy on the sweets from now on or I’m going to be as big as one of these mountains out here and these outdoorsy freaks will try to climb me.

Nick got cracking on cooking the beef and I went crazy looking for my flashdrive, good thing nothing was on it….wouldn’t ya know it…Bessie STILL didn’t come!  I knew I put my drive in my pants pocket when I left class and I hung my pants up in my closet when we got home the day before…using this reasoning…BOOOMSHAKALAKA!  (wow, Microsoft Word didn’t try to spell check BOOOMSHAKALAKA) Whoomp there it is! My blue flashdrive fell onto the blue case of water I have stored away in my closet. Arkansas came over and joined us for our taco feast that I poorly chopped a tomato for.  We ate at our dining room table for like the 3rd time ever and then Nick & Arkansas…or as I call them….mom & dad…started clearing the table and my noisy compliment to the chef from the back door startled Nick from across the room.  My butt was like a ventriloquist, he thought something fell inside the refrigerator…that good.  (It just took my 4 minutes to type that sentence because I was laughing to hard and couldn’t breathe hahahahahahaha)

After dinner I retired to my room for some boot shining and some Netflix.  I was ready to fall asleep around 9pm but I just couldn’t sleep.  I hopped on Facebook and I’m glad I did.  An old friend I grew up going to school with shared some really touching news.  He’d been toying with the idea of going back to school for awhile and he told me that after reading The Triple F (this blog) that he decided it was finally time to bite the bullet.  My writing even earned me a beer when I get back to NJ!  I’ll make it a Barg’s or an A&W, Stewart’s is also good.  When he told me that I was overcome with awesomeness.  It’s so cool seeing how many people are in t he same boat in so many walks of life.  So if there’s one thing that I guess you guys can take from all of this is you’re not alone; no matter how bad you think things may be, there are other people going through similar phases in their lives.  It’s not always easy to identify who they are but if you find them, use (for lack of a better word) them.  You never know how influential you can be and when you guys help each other, you’ll make each other feel better.

What the hell?!?! When did I turn into Michael Jackson?  No seriously…I meant that.  Remember how I was ready to give up on the WFR course until everybody else voiced how lost they were?  I was in my shell up until that point in the class and once I realized I wasn’t alone, NAU WFRers got to see the real Jeff Ward.  I rolled with it when meeting my fellow ranger trainees and it led one of my classmates to telling one our instructors that I was the funny one in the group.  Not exactly how I wanna be remembered but I can’t hide from who I am.

I couldn’t really sleep last night so I did what any insomniac would do, watch old Beavis & Butthead episodes on Netflix and re-runs of the Jersey Shore online. Prior to doing that, I submitted my fitness goal for the class. If I reach that goal…WATCH OUT! I finally fell asleep but it was super late at night/early in the morning.  At least I got to talk to Maureen & Matt and then Katie & Baby Jimmy tonight!

Woooooof.

Tired

Man it was rough waking up this morning; and waking up early-ish was optional.  We had an optional job application seminar from 10-12 before class started at 1 but what maniac would skip out on that?  Apparently some did and according to Kathy, even more did in last semester’s class.  I drug major ass getting ready this morning but we were told we would have a dry run uniform/appearance inspection before class today so that meant I had to shave…again.  Shaving every day is tough, especially since I think my New York Giants Gillette Fusion is out to hurt me.

The workshop was basically a review of stuff I found out on my own with a few key pointers here and there.  We scour for jobs on a government job site and today I broadened my scope by just typing in “park” as my keyword.  I don’t know what will come of it but I found some jobs to save to apply to later.  During our lunch break, everybody was lamenting about how sore they were from our intro to PT day…I was feeling it a little less than everybody else which was a shocker.  The only part of me hurt was the left side of my right leg hamstring…if that makes sense. It wasn’t too bad but it made me walk with a bit of a limp.  I can’t wait until I reach 23 squats!  Not wanting to have to worry about finding a spot later in the day I was looking for another alternative to leaving campus for lunch, CJ suggested one of the cafeterias 2 buildings down so him, Nick, & I headed that way.  This place was cool if not for anything other than the name…The DUB!!!!!  This place was like a 3 headed monster.  It had a convenience store, then your traditional all-you-can eat buffet style cafeteria, and then there was the section we went to….which I guess could be summed up as a food court or something similar to a rest area on the Parkway or wherever.  There were three stations, pasta, burger, & pita.  We all got chicken caesar wraps, I got mine on a spinach wrap with a banana & a raspberry tea, and since there were no open tables so we took our grub to go.

Is This My Kind of Place OR WHAT!?!?!?!?!

Pat & Owen putting together a puzzle during lunch.

Remember back when I told you that mountain biking was like crack to these Flagstaffians?  The Quad, I guess it’s called, looked like the creepy pimp daddy walk through the laundromat, secret knock on a wall panel to the downstairs underground lair crack house.  Since it’s fresh in my brain, if you’ve ever seen Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, just think of all the bikes that were out in that shopping center when Pee Wee super chains up his bike before it gets stolen and multiply that times 5.  (I’d post a video but I couldn’t find one).  We were walking on the sidewalk and dudes were just off roading on their bikes, passing us left and right.  I’m so happy that people actually still ride bikes.  I don’t know…weird.
We got back to our building and found a student lounge for us to eat.  It was just about time to head up to class, see how fast that went, and the first thing we did go through our dry run uniform inspection.  I’d been giving everyone the heads up to make sure their butt buttons were buttoned, not everybody listened and Kathy reiterated my point.  Good thing it was a dry run.  Our belts have to match our boots but mine are a little off, they’re different shades of brown.  My belt is so dark brown it looks black and Kathy had to clarify it with me.  Maybe I’ll look for a lighter colored belt.
***If anybody knows where I can find normal cotton plain brown socks please direct me to them…I can’t take my feet sweating in these wool winter socks anymore! ***

We had a bit more history today but we turned more towards the functions and practices of NPS rangers.  Covered some important and interesting stuff and then it was time to head home.  My leg was really getting to me now.  Got home, guess who got more mail & guess who still didn’t get any!  Seriously guys, send Nick something.  My last fantasy football championship check arrived along with a weatherproof EMS notepad and “rite in the rain” pen….I’m really going to miss that Amazon gift card.

I chatted with La Stone on La Phone which was good for me because I’ve really been missing her. L I knew she was in good hands because she had her weekly date with Samantha “Happy Birthday” Faljean which is cool cuz she’s super rad!  They’re having t-shirt time then probably making burgers for the boys.
I got a cool Facebook shout out from Tiffany Petriello, she’s already planning a magazine for me called Ranger Jeff…biting off the old school Ranger Rick magazines that are out there.  She’s funny hahahaha.

I tried to get out to the Brooklyn Decker look alike cleaners but they closed at 6…damn.  I then ventured over to Walgreens and yes you guessed it…they even sell alcohol there too.  Walgreens was a bit of a disappointment because I needed more hangers so I then went to the best place on earth, Super Walmart.  $1.25 for 10 hangers!!!  They were $5.99 Walgreens.  I’m such a bargain shopper.  When I got home it was time for dinner so I made some whole wheat penne and threw in some left over taco meat, tomatoes, & alfredo sauce…pretty damn good. I chatted with B~DuB for a bit then started on the Triple F.  Laura called and made me laugh, even SHE got to use the “that’s like a dollar an hour” line in context.  She did have some bad news for me these past two days.  My baby Indy is walking around with a bad limp and there’s NOTHING I can do for her. L L L I hope she gets better soon.

Alright dudes & dudettes.  The next 4 days are going to be brutal so please keep the health of my back in your thoughts. We have our first 1.5 mile run in our PT tomorrow, then 8-5 Sat & Sun we have defensive tactics and then Monday morning is PT time again.  LIVE FOR THIS!!!!!!

Good Night.

Good News for the Dudes in my Fantasy Football Leagues

Hello there.  I've gained some new chums lately so if you're wondering what this is, well aside from the obvious, this is me sharing my Arizona experience as suggested by my friends and family back in NJ. Feel free to read it, I love getting feedback, but this is mainly just my way of keeping in touch with the ginormous support group I've gathered through the many stages of my life.

For those of you that have been reading this all along, I don't think I can be as descriptive as I was with the WFR & "vacation day" posts but I'll share what I can.  Enjoy...

Here We Go:
Today was the big day.  The day everything I’ve been working toward for essentially the past 8 years, ever since my sophomore year at Stockton when I changed my major from Marine Biology to Criminal Justice & Psychology.  I’d been looking forward to a fresh start toward something I know I’d enjoy and be very good at for years and when I woke up and I was the farthest thing from nervous.

At least I didn’t feel nervous but my body must’ve felt differently, subconsciously.  That little internal clock of mine woke me up every hour at about quarter after the hour from 5am until I officially got up, hit the head, and then headed to the kitchen to grab some breakfast.  Whole wheat bagel thin with cream cheese, watermelon, and some diet green tea...mmmmmmm.  Jane left a sweet good luck message on the chalkboard for us and I pretty much gazed at it the entire time I ate.  I went from my meal to trying to get a hold of Stockton to try to figure out my transcript ordeal so I can finish my two applications from yesterday.  It turns out that they don’t have an online option for the transcripts so my hard copies should be good enough to scan and add to my apps….cool.

It was time to get dressed and I was certainly happy I went one size bigger than I normally wear because these pants get a little huggy. I put on my super thick NPS issued brown socks, my brown belt, and my super shiny brown-ish colored boots, and the cool thing about this class…I packed up my laptop and flashdrive that’ll serve as my “notebook” which gets turned in for a grade, and we were on our way.  The social sciences building is on the other side of campus so we took a different way to school and found our new parking lot.   We heard a soft “hey guys!” from behind us when we got out of the car.  We turned and saw Christine, the youngest future ranger of the group that we met the night before at our meet & greet, then the 3 of us headed a different way into the building and made our way into the class.

We walked in and saw a lot of familiar faces both from the WFR & the little meet and greet.  We could only see the back of our nametags but Arkansas showed me where my seat was…back row baby.  My neighbors are Josh from WFR & Eric I met at the meet and greet.  Some of the WFRers talked across the room to each other and as 12 neared closer, Kathy (the director) walked in and the class grew silent.  It was at this point where I got my first “job” of program.  Thanks to my glorious god given height I was requested to take the clock off the wall and set it to the right time…it has mind of its own.  We had a packet of papers in front of us and the top page was entitled “Who Are You??” and there were 8 questions about ourselves that I THOUGHT we were going to stand up in front of everybody and talk about ourselves…I was wrong.  We met a couple of the instructors and then it was time for our neighbors to interview us and then THEY would introduce us to the class; the WFRers weren’t allowed to work together.  The items included preferred name, home town, educational background, leadership experience, work experience, hobbies, dream job, & 2 unique items of personal interest.

I had some fun with it, naturally, I had A LOT of leadership experience to share and I never really thought of my dream job before.  For hobbies I put basketball, texas hold’em & fantasy football and dream job I put park ranger, pro poker player, & pro athlete.  My 2 items of personal interest were my 3 fantasy football championships from this season (everybody laughed but I added that those championships covered my rent while I’m out here) and that I saw my first elk ever when I was riding home from Sedona last week.  HERE’S THE GOOD NEWS FOR THOSE GUYS IN MY FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUES & the DONKEYS DOWN IN AC… once I am employed by the National Park Service I can NO LONGER GAMBLE! Now somebody else will have a chance to win the title in the J.E.F.F. …..man I hope they don’t ever play football again after this season hahahaha.

As the class went on and with this exercise fresh in my brain, I toyed with the idea of going after our next topic.  I’m contemplating putting myself up for the Class President role!  A week or 2 ago I thought there was no way I’d want this responsibility, mostly because of the speech I’d have to give at graduation, but the more comfortable I got in Flagstaff and the more experience I realized I had…the more I thought about maybe making this happen.  Nothing will be decided until next week, after we beat each other up all weekend, so I’ll see how comfortable I am with everything going on and MAYBE put myself out there.  Some of the responsibilities include interrupting instructors for our breaks and checking out everybody’s uniforms prior to inspection…but I started doing that on my own today thanks to what we were taught when preparing for the MCPS Academy…back pocket buttons buttoned, some people’s belts missed their loops…stuff like that.  It’s a lot of responsibility but it could be very good for me!  Nick got a program long job today, he’s the Sergeant at Arms or of Arms…his job is to make sure the room is ready to be locked up for the day after we’re done, i.e. shutting the windows, turning off the computers, clearing the dry erase board, etc..

I’m fortunate to be in this program at NAU.  Kathy informed us that whenever there is a FLETC class (when you get a full time gig you go to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Georgia for 4 months for more training with other Federal Law Enforcement agencies) the majority of the new recruits come from NAU’s program.  She further pumped me up by sharing that in the past 3 years only 2 students didn’t get placed in jobs….that’s AWESOME.  We met our PT instructor and he’s not a crazy scream at you ex marine drill sergeant type guy.  He works for the school but it doesn’t seem like he’s much older than a student.  He’s got a great training background and the things we’re going to do in his portion of the class gave me a kind of “Biggest Loser” feeling.  We’ll track our workouts, get some nutrition information and we’ll have our own workouts outlined to meet our “fitness goals”, which we actually hand in as part of a grade.  Cool ey?

The day went basically how you’d expect an orientation to go. People had questions about not being able to use the gym and what not so I volunteered my knowledge about Aquaplex, “The Plex”, and I think I scared away any workout partners in doing so.  Taking pictures at various things is encouraged because we’ll have a slideshow at graduation!  I won’t be posting much on Facebook because I don’t think that we can or something, I’m not sure if that just pertains to videos, but for the sake of professionalism, any pics I take I may just have to save for my near & dear when I get home.  We got some text books that we borrow for the semester, went over some rules, and had a little tutorial for our computers…then it was time for the fun stuff.  We got our uniforms followed by our duty belts!  Yes, I had a duty belt with the MCPS but they were nothing like this! To go with my familiar OC spray (training model), handcuffs, & radio holster were my new found firearms holster & training firearm, asp baton & holster, magazine clip holsters, and belt keepers…I’m feeling official…but it was a lot to carry out to the car.
I'm not even sure I can have this pic but just letting everybody know I'm okay.

We got home and showed off our new equipment to Jane and Nick started dinner, Rice A Roni with grilled chicken.  Tomorrow’s Taco Night! My mail from home showed up today (thanks M-DuB) and the EMS notebook & The Other Guys arrived from Amazon (love gift cards) as well.  While Nick was cooking I scanned some of my qualifications & transcripts and added them to my applications and checked in on Laura.  We ate, I finished my applications and Nick took off to go running.  How can he go running right after he ate!?!?!  I gave myself an hour and went over to “The Plex” to get a workout in.  Damn my ticker is mad at me for taking that month off….YIKES!  I was close to running 2 miles around the week before Christmas but I could hardly do 1 tonight.  In my defense, running was the 3rd part of my cardio trifecta (bike, elliptical, & treadmill).  The pool & bball courts were less crowded today but the gym was the most crowded I’ve seen it so far...and today some of the local meatheads showed up.  All-in-all it was a good workout.  I went slow & light since TOMORROW STARTS OUR PT!!!   I came home, cleaned up a little bit and threw on The Other Guys…say what you will but I liked it haha. Time for a shower and for hitting the sack.  Tough day tomorrow!

Good Night Friends & Family
